Director's Message

Many of us love the “Hall of Faith” chapter of the book of Hebrews. We love reading about the “heroes of the faith” at the beginning of chapter 11. Then we come to verses 36-38: “Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated…” Many of us either skip this section or we want to minimize it. Passages on suffering do not necessarily warm our hearts. However, as you will see in the articles in this issue of One Ambition, suffering and unfulfilled ministry efforts are realities that many missionaries wrestle with in their ministries. So, why do they do it? And why should you care?

This particular passage ends with, “… God had provided something better for us…” (verse 40). This speaks of the future described in heaven in Revelation 7:9-10: “After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, ‘Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!’” The “something better” is the realization of the hopes of all “heroes of faith” from every age, along with the “multitudes” that will come into the Kingdom because of each of the missionaries who place their lives on the line to take the Gospel to “every nation”… such as the missionaries who wrote the articles you are holding. As you read this issue, may you be reminded that your support of Pioneers is playing a crucial role in taking the Gospel to the nations.

And there is a greater why. The main theme of the book of Hebrews is the absolute sufficiency and supremacy of Jesus Christ as our Saviour and our King. In this chaotic and violent world, torn by political strife and terrorism, there is no better news than the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the reality that the Kingdom of God is near! Together we are invited to sing praise in adoration of our King, who will take away all suffering, and bring every knee to bend to His sovereign reign!

In His Mercy,
James Kim
