Missions Today Isn't What People Think

It is not just one person with a passport and a sermon. It is not a Western export or a one-size-fits-all program. Missions today is global, diverse, and deeply personal. It is the whole Church, every believer, everywhere, living out one shared purpose: “It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known…” (Romans 15:20). This is the heartbeat of missions: to make Christ known where He is not yet known.

The Whole Church

Missions is not reserved for a select few. It is for everyone born again in Jesus, no matter where they are from, the language they speak, or the gifts they carry. “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” (1 Corinthians 12:27).

The Church is made up of many parts, and every part matters. We need nurses who bring healing and hope, digital marketers who amplify the gospel online, coaches who disciple through sports, chefs who build community around the table, teachers who shape minds and hearts, and evangelists who proclaim the good news.

Each one is essential. Each one is sent. Each one shares the same ambition: to make Christ known.

To the Whole World

Missions today is not just from the West to the rest. It is from everywhere to everywhere. The Church in Brazil, Nigeria, South Korea, India, and beyond is rising up to reach the unreached. God is mobilizing His people across cultures, languages, and continents. “Go and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:19). This is not a one-directional movement. It is a global collaboration of believers, united in Christ, joining God in His mission.

Missions takes many forms:

  • A business owner launching a startup in a closed country
  • A student studying abroad sharing their faith
  • A family planting roots in a new culture to live out the gospel
  • A local believer discipling others in their own community

Missions today is creative, contextual, and collaborative. It is the Church living out the gospel in every sphere of life, with one ambition: to see Christ proclaimed, new believers born, disciples formed, and churches established where He is not yet known.
